Audio walking tours in Puglia and Basilicata

The heel of Italy long faced east. Otranto, the easternmost town in the country, looked across a seventy kilometer strait to Byzantium and the Balkans rather than to Rome. Bari spent a thousand years being handed back and forth across the Adriatic and made a saint of the traffic.

The stone tells the rest. Lecce carved its Baroque churches from a pale local limestone that made deep carving possible. Alberobello built an old town of trulli, dry limestone houses laid without mortar so they could be pulled apart before a royal inspector arrived. Over the border in Basilicata, the Sassi of Matera are cave houses cut into a ravine wall, lived in from prehistory and emptied by law in the 1950s.

Each tour takes about 90 to 120 minutes over 8 to 9 stops. Stop 1 of every tour is free to hear before you buy.
