Sicily has been rebuilt by almost everyone who took it, and these tours read the island in layers. Palermo's oldest street runs dead straight down to the water, rebuilt and renamed by Arabs, Normans and Spaniards in turn. Catania was buried by lava in 1669, leveled by an earthquake in 1693, and built again on top of both in the black stone the volcano supplied.
Elsewhere the layers are reuse. At Agrigento fire marked one temple and a church remade another. Cefalù kept the enormous cathedral Roger II began on the shore in 1131, and the town around it went on washing linen in a covered river. Taormina, strung along one street between two gates, ends at a Greek theater whose famous view of Etna exists because the stage wall fell down.
Each tour takes about 130 to 165 minutes over 8 to 12 stops. Stop 1 of every tour is free to hear before you buy.

Taormina has one street, running between two gates along a shelf of Monte Tauro, and everything the town has ever been is arranged along it: a cathedral built like a fort, a fountain whose crowned half-horse woman is the town's emblem, a wall of Roman brick holding back a buried reservoir, and a palace where the Sicilian parliament sat in 1411.

In 1131 Roger II moved this town down off its rock and began a cathedral on the shore — a fortified church that was also to be his own mausoleum, and far too big for the settlement it stood in.
